A number of movies that have been made in America or by Americans have been banned in North and South Korea. Many times a cleaned up version, or censored version, was cleared for release. My question is, if American films are so disturbing why is it that many Korean movies have the ability to leave their viewer creeped out, devastated, heartbroken or furious?
South Korea Bans These American Films
The list I found of banned films by South Korea did not give explanations so in some cases I have offered my own:
- The battleship Potempkin-until 1992
- A Clockwork Orange-OK this was a disturbing film; was it, however, more disturbing than the Korean movie Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance?
- The Last Tango in Paris-back in 1973 this caused quite a stir in America as well. Now however, the commotion it caused is practically laughable.
- Three Days of the Condor-1973
- Apocalypse Now-but only during President Park Chung-hee’s regime due to its antiwar theme.
- Ban Geum-ryeon-made by South Korean director Kim Ki-young was actually banned for six years. It was released in 1981 with 40 minutes missing.
- Scream-here again, how is this so different than some of the Korean Movies that creeped out even avid horror fans (Old Boy)? The blood?
North Korea Didn’t Do Much Better
The list from which I got these actually did give explanations, but as I said before some of those psycho-thriller Korean movies make these look silly.
- Texas Chainsaw Massacre-banned in 1974. The good news; they have released it since then.
- Suspiria-admittedly this movie was creepy; certainly no creepier than either of the Korean movies I mentioned earlier. (released in 2003).
North Korea banned quite a few more actually. Don’t get me wrong, there are some absolutely stupendous Korean movies out there. I just don’t understand the reasoning that sometimes differentiates them.
